Dedicated Corridor Management Unit Proposed for NHAI
The Road Transport Ministry has submitted a proposal to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) for establishing a dedicated Corridor Management Unit (CMU) within the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to oversee the operation and maintenance of highway stretches. This proposal comes in light of the doubling of the length of widened National Highways (NH) over the past decade, with projections indicating further growth to 89,900 km by 2037 and 1.27 lakh km by 2047. The establishment of the CMU is deemed critical to ensure the effective management of NH stretches, especially as highway development is expected to approach saturation levels in the coming years. The CMU will focus on end-to-end management of NH stretches and will involve training NHAI staff for the operation and maintenance of these stretches.
