Gadkari Announces Rs 800 Cr Dehradun–Mussoorie Road, Shares Key Uttarakhand Project Updates

Delhi-mussoorie
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced a series of road and connectivity projects in Uttarakhand, with a key focus on improving access between Dehradun and Mussoorie through a planned Rs 800 crore two-lane shoulder road.

The proposed Dehradun–Mussoorie road project, for which DPR preparation is expected to begin by August 15, aims to ease traffic congestion on the hilly stretch while improving safety and travel efficiency. The project gains significance as the government has also selected a new alignment to extend the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway towards Mussoorie, which is expected to decongest city traffic and streamline tourist movement.

Providing an update on ongoing works, Gadkari said that the 51 km, six-lane spur road from Saharanpur Bypass to Haridwar will be inaugurated in June. He added that a four-lane greenfield bypass in Haridwar, being developed at a cost of Rs 100 crore, will be completed by October 2026, helping ease congestion for traffic heading towards Haridwar and Rishikesh.

Highlighting the broader infrastructure push under the leadership of Narendra Modi, Gadkari noted that projects worth Rs 1.3 lakh crore have been undertaken in Uttarakhand so far. Of these, works worth Rs 25,000 crore covering 2,461 km have been completed, while projects worth Rs 35,000 crore are under construction and another Rs 80,000 crore are in DPR and pipeline stages.

Among other key projects, a Rs 150 crore four-lane road from Kota Sahib to Dehradun via Ballupur is set to begin in May, improving connectivity between religious destinations in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The Rishikesh bypass project, estimated at Rs 100 crore, has received Cabinet approval and is scheduled to start by August.

Gadkari further informed that a 21 km four-lane bypass in Rudrapur, costing Rs 1,050 crore, will be completed by October 2026, while a 15 km four-lane bypass from Kashipur, costing Rs 936 crore, is targeted for completion by December 2026. A 12 km elevated four-lane corridor from Dehradun to Asharodi via Jhajra, estimated at Rs 16 crore, is expected to be completed by April 2027.

In addition, a 20 km four-lane road from Baliyavi Jalighat to Rishikesh, costing Rs 745 crore, will be ready by April 2028, while a 60 km two-lane road from Joshimath to Malari, being developed at Rs 630 crore, is slated for completion by December 2026.

The minister also announced that a Rs 17,700 crore four-lane bypass for Dehradun will be taken up after DPR completion by May 2026. A Rs 2,300 crore four-lane greenfield bypass (Phase 2) in Haridwar will also be initiated by 2026, forming part of a proposed ring road to address growing traffic demand.

Addressing the challenge of landslides in the region, Gadkari said that works worth Rs 4,300 crore across 296 locations have been approved using scientific and technological interventions, with projects worth Rs 907 crore already completed. DPRs are being prepared for additional works worth Rs 5,800 crore across 194 sites.

He also highlighted the Rs 4,000 crore ropeway project from Sonprayag to Kedarnath, which will reduce travel time from 8–9 hours to about 30 minutes, significantly improving accessibility to the pilgrimage site.

Gadkari expressed confidence that the upcoming infrastructure projects will transform Uttarakhand’s connectivity landscape and open new avenues for economic, social, and tourism-driven growth.
