Tamil Nadu govt speeds up Rs 8,500-cr Madurai metro rail project
Tamil Nadu government has accelerated the implementation of Phase-I of the Madurai metro rail project, with the detailed project report (DPR) already prepared and soon to be submitted to the government. The project, estimated at Rs 8,500 crores, aims to enhance transportation infrastructure in Madurai.
T Archunan, the Project Director of the Madurai metro rail project, highlighted three challenging areas during his recent inspection near the Madurai railway station and Meenakshi Amman temple. These challenges include bypassing the railway track near Madura College, constructing the rail track in the central zone of Madurai, which houses numerous traditional structures, and planning an underground track beneath the Vaigai riverbed.
The state government has allocated funds for the first phase of the Madurai metro project, spanning a distance of 31 km between Thirumangalam and Othakadai. This initial phase is part of the larger plan to develop a comprehensive metro rail network in Madurai.
