Tricity metro project's first phase to be expanded to 77km
The administrations of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, along with representatives from the Unified Metro Transportation Authority (UMTA), have jointly approved the commencement of construction for the first phase of the Tricity Metro Project. The initial phase will now span 77kms, an extension from the previous plan of 66 km.
The project's Phase 1 will connect Parol in New Chandigarh (Mohali) to Panchkula Extension in Sector 20, with Chandigarh having a network of 35 km, Panchkula 11 km, and Mohali/New Chandigarh 31 km. The timeline for Phase 1 is set from 2027 to 2037, while Phase 2 will follow after 2037, expanding the metro network from Airport Chowk to Manakpur Kallar (5 km) and ISBT Zirakpur to Pinjore (20 km).
To kickstart the detailed planning, RITES has been assigned the task of preparing a comprehensive project report and annual analysis report, with an estimated cost of Rs 6.54 crore. The detailed project report is expected to be ready by March 2024, following which necessary permissions for construction will be sought.
The total cost of the project is tentatively estimated to be around Rs 10,570 crore, with 20 percent contributed by the states, another 20 percent by the Centre, and the remaining 60 percent financed by a lending agency. This ambitious metro project aims to enhance connectivity and transportation in the Tricity region, benefiting millions of residents.
