Adding to its cargo handling capacity, the Ennore Port has chalked out an ambitious plan to set up container terminal entailing an investment of Rs. 1,270cr and to set up the mega project big players like Adani Port, Essar and L&T are among the 11 companies, which have shown keen interest in the project, said Chairman and Managing Director, MA Bhaskarachar, adding that the project is awaiting the cabinet committee on economic affairs approval, which is expected very shortly. The new container terminal with a quay length of 730m will have a capacity to handle 1.40 million TEUs per annum and will be set on design, build, finance, operate and transfer basis for a 30 years concession period.

Elaborating further, he said adding that during the last few years, the Ennore port has been growing substantially with a number of projects being undertaken and in the past few years, its cargo and Exim trade growing further and it is looking for long-term user agreement as well as captive cargo arrangement. According to shipping minister GK Vasan, the container terminal will be one of the three important projects which will be taken up in the port to increase its capacity to 66.8 million tonne per annum (mtpa) by the end of the 12th Five Year Plan. The other projects include the Rs 4,500cr LNG terminal by Indian Oil Corporation and a coal berth of 9 mtpa for Tamil Nadu Electricity Board on captive basis and that the port has already developed a general cargo-cu‎m-car terminal at a cost of Rs 140cr.
