As many as half a dozen port projects building giants have joined the race to win the Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd (VISL) project involving a whopping investment worth Rs. 5000 crore. The major port operators, who responded to the global tender included Gammon Infrastructure Projects; the Hyundai-Concast consortium; Essar Ports; Adani Ports; and Srei-OHL, a consortium of Srei Infra and Spanish construction company Obrascón Huarte Lain. It may be recalled that prior to this, VISL had called for RFQ to build the port superstructure and operate the proposed deepwater port and container transshipment terminal at Vizhinjam. The same port operators have also responded to the other RFQ for engineering, procurement and construction works floated separately. VISL on its part has made it crystal clear that the same entity takes up work indicated under both RFQs apparently on cue with the Centre’s new scheme of things implementing mega projects. According to managing director and CEO, AS Suresh Babu, the RFQs would be examined by VISL’s technical and legal consultants and their reports referred to an empowered committee of the Kerala government and the operators clearing this round would in turn be served the request for proposal documents. The fact that it has attracted the attention of the leading international port operators indicated that the project has made into the global reckoning.
