Ensuring quicker and hassle free facilities to flyers, the civil aviation ministry has decided to set up a green field international airport on the outskirts of Vishakhapatnam, Civil Aviation minister, P Ashok Gajapati Raju, said elaborating that the ministry has identified Bhogapuram district located about 45 km from Visakhapatnam for building the mega international airport project on an area of 15,000 acres of land. The setting up of the state of the art airport will go a long way to add to the growth potential of the fast-growing industrial city, which is also being developed as a smart city with the assistance of the US. Elaborating further he added that the present international airport at Visakhapatnam is suffering from certain handicaps as it is under the control of the Defence and their priorities are different and that the geographical location of the airport with hills on one side is an added attraction for the visiting tourists.

The State Government would take care of the land acquisition issues while the social and economic concerns of the local population would be taken care by the central government. The new airport would trigger economic growth in the north-coastal districts and also East Godavari region with state of the art air cargo facilities.
