Betting big on elevated roads with underpasses along Sathy-Bannari and Dhimbam-Hasanur stretches of Mysuru Road, with wildlife experts emphasized on construction such roads as the solution for prevention of human-animal conflicts and road kills in the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR). The Sathy-Bannari stretch segmenting the forest area to a length of about 10 km is a vital corridor for movement of elephants between the Western and Eastern ghats. Likewise, elephant crossings are frequent between Dhimbam and Hasanur. In view of this, construction of elevated roads will be a lasting solution for safeguarding wildlife in STR. The draft policy guideline eco-friendly measures to mitigate impacts of linear infrastructure on wildlife prepared by the WII recommending engineering solutions applicable to specific wildlife and habitats is reportedly under consideration of the Ministry. Wildlife activists have called upon the Ministry to consider the case of STR in right earnest factoring in the continuous rise in number of heavy vehicles criss crossing the national highway linking Tamil Nadu and Karnataka through the thick forest.
