Madurai Highways Dept Initiates Land Acquisition for 4-Way Bypass Road
Following the completion of the Kochadai grade separator, which facilitates smoother city traffic flow up to Virattipattu via HMS Colony, the State Highways Department (NH wing) has commenced land acquisition for the construction of a new greenfield four-way bypass road connecting Virattipattu to Nagamalai Pudukottai in Madurai.
Projected to cost ₹260 crore, the 3.53-kilometer road will originate a few meters from the terminus of the grade separator. It aims to provide commuters from HMS Colony, Achampattu, Virattipattu, and Nagamalai Pudukottai with an alternate route to the Kochi-Bodi national highway, bypassing the Kanyakumari-Bengaluru highway.
The current narrow two-way road linking the city to the Kochi-Bodi NH traverses residential areas of Virattipattu and Achampattu, leading to congestion. Once completed, the new road will alleviate this congestion, enhancing traffic flow and safety, as the existing two-way road has been prone to minor accidents due to increasing traffic volumes.
