Chandigarh gets green signal for Rs 13,600-cr Tricity Metro Project
Chandigarh, the capital city of Haryana and Punjab, is on the brink of receiving a metro transit system as the proposed Tricity Metro project has received the green signal. The Chandigarh Administration has agreed to the changes suggested in the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) by the Haryana and Punjab governments. The development work of the Metro, which requires an investment of Rs 13,600 crore, will commence in a phased manner across three cities.
In the first phase, Chandigarh will witness the construction of a 14.5 km long metro line, while Mohali and Panchkula will have 25.5 km and 3.5 km long tracks respectively. Subsequently, the second phase will involve extending the metro line by 4.5 km to Panchkula and 5.5 km to Chandigarh. Furthermore, additional stations have been proposed to be added along the route, including PGIMER, Secretariat, Vidhansabha, Pinjore, Kalka, and the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The metro will also cover important destinations such as the Airport, Fountain Chowk, ISBT Panchkula, Chandigarh Railway Station, Tribune Chowk, JLPL Industrial Area, and Anaj Bazar Chowk.
Apart from providing enhanced connectivity, the Tricity Metro will alleviate the burden on the roads. The traffic police of Chandigarh have disclosed that the number of registered vehicles in the city surpasses its population by over 8 percent.
