Chennai phase 2 metro rail to get 63 steel bridges for driverless trains
During the upcoming Phase 2 of the metro rail, 63 steel bridges will be installed at various locations, facilitating the passage of driverless trains over buildings and flyovers. These steel girders, with long spans, are essential in areas with limited vertical clearance where traditional concrete viaducts with pillars are impractical due to existing structures or restricted spaces below. A recent installation involved a 40-meter-long, 222-tonne steel girder bridge above Chennai bypass flyovers on Mount-Poonamallee High Road, near Porur, as part of the construction from Porur to Poonamallee Bypass. The 116.1km Phase 2 is scheduled to open to the public gradually between 2025 and 2028, with metal girders strategically placed at locations including Chennai Bypass, Thelliyaragaram, Poonamallee Junction, and others.
