DMRC launches TBM Bhoomi for Magenta line extension
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has commenced a tunnelling operation using the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) named "Bhoomi" to excavate a tunnel from Derawal Nagar to Pulbangash on the Magenta Line extension (Line-8) connecting Janakpuri West to R.K. Ashram corridor. Spanning approximately 3 km between Derawal Nagar and Pulbangash, the tunnel will range in depth from 12.4 meters at Derawal Nagar station to 25.9 meters near the Najafgarh drain, traversing various geological layers beneath the surface.
The Delhi Metro is equipping all of its TBMs with the Bore Tunnelling Electrical Ahead Monitoring (BEAM) System during this phase. This pioneering system enables the TBM to proactively anticipate the geological strata up to 20 meters ahead of its cutter head face in real-time. By doing so, it can effectively detect and address any unexpected obstacles such as filled wells, cavities, or aquifers that could lead to ground settlement if encountered without proper treatment.
