UKMRC unveils rapid transit systems in Dehradun, Haridwar & Rishikesh
In an effort to alleviate traffic congestion in Uttarakhand, the Uttarakhand Metro Rail Corporation (UKMRC) has unveiled plans to develop state-of-the-art rapid transit systems in Dehradun, Haridwar, and Rishikesh. According to MD Jitendra Tyagi, UKMRC GFX, the nation's first Neo Metro, will be implemented on two corridors in Dehradun, while Haridwar will witness the introduction of the country's inaugural Pod taxi. These initiatives aim to provide a significant boost to eco-friendly and cost-effective public transportation options in the state.
The Neo Metro, a rubber tire-based mass transit system, will draw power from an overhead electric conductor and operate on a dedicated elevated track. The Pod taxis, on the other hand, are driverless electric vehicles that will move along specially designed tracks. Both of these modern transportation solutions will contribute to enhancing connectivity and reducing traffic congestion in the respective regions.
Additionally, UKMRC plans to complete two ropeways in Haridwar and Rishikesh to enhance the travel experience for tourists visiting the region for pilgrimage and spiritual solace. The development of ropeways and Pod taxis will be carried out through a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with equal investment from the central and state governments. The Neo Metro project will be jointly funded by the central and state governments as well.
The two Neo Metro corridors, spanning a total length of 22.42 kilometers, will connect ISBT to Gandhi Bagh and FRI to Raipur, effectively covering the breadth and length of the city. The Neo Metro trains will have a maximum speed of 70 kmph, with an average speed of 25 kmph. The project has already received approval from the state government and is currently awaiting clearance from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
