Madurai Corporation Initiates Tender for Underground Drainage System
Madurai Corporation has launched a tender for the construction of an underground drainage (sewerage) system in the remaining areas of the city, aiming to expedite the project before the declaration of the Lok Sabha election. The initiative aims to provide approximately 60,000 new house connections under this system. As per the tender notification, the project involves laying a total of 450 kilometers of underground drainage pipelines along the north and south banks of the Vaigai river, costing ₹462 crore under the Amrut 2.0 scheme. The construction is slated for completion within 36 months, followed by a six-month trial run and an 18-month maintenance period by the contractor. Specifically, 210 kilometers of pipelines will be laid in the northern areas at a cost of ₹167.76 crore, while 283 kilometers will be laid in the southern areas costing ₹269.46 crore.
The project also includes covering 490 kilometers of roads across 39 wards and constructing four new pumping stations in the south and one in the north of Vaigai river, with a total of 7,305 manholes planned. The corporation official mentioned the possibility of constructing a new Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) if required after the completion of the proposed drainage system. Bids are set to be opened in mid-March, with the contractor permitted to make minor design changes within the initial three months. However, the project's timeline may be affected if election dates are announced before the bidding process concludes.
