Shipping Ministry Approves ₹645Cr for 10 Waterways projects in Assam
The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, has announced an investment of over ₹645 crores for the development of 10 waterways projects under the Sagarmala programme. These projects, located along the river Brahmaputra (National Waterways 2), will receive full financial assistance from the central government to enhance terminals and riverine infrastructure. The initiatives aim to boost connectivity and stimulate economic growth in the region.
The projects include the construction of slipways at strategic locations like Maya Ghat in Dhubri district and Majuli district, as well as the establishment of passenger terminals at Ghagor in North Lakhimpur district and Bahari in Barpeta district. Additionally, passenger terminals are planned for Goalpara, Guijan, Kurua, Dhubri, Disangmukh, and Matmora, catering to diverse district needs in Assam.
These initiatives are expected to enhance transportation efficiency, drive industrial development, and promote trade in the region. The government's focus on expanding port infrastructure and developing mega ports, coupled with efforts to increase the share of Inland Water Transport (IWT) to 5% by 2030 under the Maritime India Vision (MIV), signifies a comprehensive approach toward India's maritime future.
