Waterways Development Projects Worth ₹308 Cr Launched in North East
The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, initiated a significant push for waterways development in the North East region by unveiling projects worth ₹308 crore in Guwahati. The projects include the inauguration of a Passenger-cum-Cargo terminal at Bogibeel near Dibrugarh, an Inland Water Transport Terminal at Sonamura in Tripura, and upgraded terminals at Karimganj & Badarpur in Assam. These terminals will facilitate both cargo and passenger movement, fostering trade & commerce growth in the region.
Furthermore, foundation stones were laid for the construction of a Customs Immigration Office in Dhubri, with an investment of ₹7.5 crore, and for the extension of the jetty at Bogibeel Terminal at a cost of ₹12 crore. The Bogibeel terminal, constructed with an investment of nearly ₹50 crore, includes various amenities such as cargo & passenger berths, transit shed, and truck parking area, enhancing eco-tourism and benefiting trade sectors like tea, polymer, coal, and fertilizers.
Additionally, the IWT Terminal at Sonamura, developed with ₹6.91 crore, has the potential to boost trans-boundary trade with Bangladesh, while the upgraded terminals at Karimganj and Badarpur, completed with ₹6.40 crore, will facilitate increased export activities and commodity movement. These projects will particularly benefit districts in Assam and neighboring states like Mizoram, Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya, with their diverse industrial and agricultural sectors.
