Afcons Infra achieves second tunnel breakthrough in Meerut RRTS Project
Afcons Infrastructure celebrated a significant achievement in the Meerut Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) project with the second tunnel breakthrough of the tunnel boring machine (TBM) S88 at the South Shaft of the Begumpul RRTS Station. This marks the fifth tunnel breakthrough out of the planned six on Package 8 of the semi-high-speed rail project, with S88 completing the final breakthrough on the 5.68 km underground section.
The TBM named Sudarshan 8.1, a Terratec Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machine, initially achieved its first breakthrough at Meerut Central Station in December 2022. It successfully tunneled 1823 meters from Bhaisali Station. After being transported back to Bhaisali Station, the machine was recommissioned in February 2023 to construct an approximately 1 km long tunnel towards Begumpul Station.
Afcons Infrastructure secured the contract for Package 8, worth Rs 1529.10 crores, from the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) in November 2020. The project has a deadline of 1310 days (3.6 years).
The construction of three underground stations at Meerut Central, Bhaisali, and Begumpul, as well as six twin tunnels, will utilize the cut and cover method. The successful completion of S88's tunneling assignments makes it the fifth out of seven TBMs to fulfill its designated tasks, joining the ranks of other TBMs on Package 4.
