Assam govt announces Rs 6,000-cr underwater rail-road tunnel
Assam government has unveiled plans to construct the first-ever underwater tunnel in the state, connecting Numaligarh and Gohpur at a cost of Rs 6,000 crores. This groundbreaking project, which will be the inaugural rail-road tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra River in the northeastern region, marks a significant milestone in the area's transportation infrastructure. Tenders for the project have been floated and are set to open soon, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
With a length of approximately 15 km, the Numaligarh-Gohpur underwater tunnel is poised to bring about a transformative change in the region's transportation landscape. By linking the north and south banks of the river, the tunnel will not only enhance connectivity but also facilitate seamless travel between Numaligarh and Gohpur, offering a more convenient and efficient mode of transportation.
The construction of this underwater tunnel carries immense significance for Assam as it will not only boost trade and commerce opportunities but also improve connectivity for residents and stimulate tourism. Presently, crossing the Brahmaputra River necessitates the use of ferries or bridges, which can be time-consuming and disrupted during monsoon season. However, the underwater tunnel will mitigate these challenges, providing a reliable and efficient transportation alternative.
Furthermore, the project represents a monumental achievement in bridging the gap between the north and south banks of the Brahmaputra River, reflecting the state's vision for a more connected and prosperous future. Assam's first-ever underwater tunnel promises to revolutionize transportation, bringing greater convenience, efficiency, and economic growth to the region.
