Another under construction bridge collapsed in Bihar
The construction of the 49-kilometer Galgalia-Bahadurganj 4-lane project in Bihar has encountered an unexpected setback as a settlement of approximately 600 mm occurred beneath pier P3 on a major bridge. The bridge spans a total length of 222 meters and consists of PSC girder superstructure resting on an RCC circular column and pile foundation. The incident took place on 23.06.2023, but fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported among the construction workers.
The construction of 4-laning of the Project between Galgalia – Bahadurganj having total length of 49 km has been awarded to GR Infra Projects Highway Ltd. The appointed date of this project is 10.01.2022. Physical progress was 70%.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the settlement may have been caused by the recent rise in water flow from Nepal in the Meachi River, which the bridge crosses. It was discovered that during the construction activity, the entire river flow was channeled through certain spans, leading to water constriction and excessive scour of the sandy river bed. As a result, the pile foundation at P3 settled.
To address the situation, a team comprising NHAI officers, the concessionaire, and the independent engineer has reached the site to carry out necessary preliminary rectification work and prevent further settlement at P3.
In the interest of an unbiased investigation, the Team Leader & Bridge Engineer of the Independent Engineer, M/s Chaitanya Project Consultancy Pvt. Ltd., and the Sr. Project Manager & Dy. Project Manager (Structure) of the Concessionaire, M/s GR Galgalia Bahadurganj Highway Private Limited, have been suspended with immediate effect.
Additionally, a committee of experts, including individuals from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), and L&T Infrastructure Engineering Limited, has been formed. This committee will conduct a detailed investigation on-site today, aiming to determine the cause of the settlement and recommend remedial measures for the pile foundation at P3 on the major bridge at CH 24+461.
