L&T emerges as lowest bidder for 3.81-km long tunnel in Mumbai
Larsen and Toubro (L&T) has emerged as the lowest bidder for the construction of a 3.81 km long underground tunnel, connecting Eastern Freeway to Coastal Road on Marine Drive in Mumbai. This project aims to alleviate traffic congestion at key junctions like Crawford Market, GPO, and CSMT, serving as a bypass for traffic to and from Marine Drive.
The decision to award the contract will be finalized after thorough scrutiny of the bid documents, as stated by an MMRDA official. L&T's bid of Rs 7,765 crore is nearly Rs 1,000 crore more than the estimated cost. If successful, this will become the longest underground road tunnel within the island city and is expected to take four years for completion.
The tunnel's alignment is planned beneath SVP road, with strategic crossings above or below the Metro 3 (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz) corridor between Grant Road and Girgaum Metro station. The tunnel is anticipated to significantly reduce travel time between the two destinations, cutting down the existing 30 to 40-minute journey via Fort and Marine Drive to just 8 to 10 minutes.
Previously, MMRDA had considered an elevated corridor but faced challenges due to the height of idols during transport. The underground tunnel project is a viable alternative to address the city's traffic woes effectively.
