NHAI unveils Rs 3,523-cr elevated corridor in TN
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has unveiled plans to construct a 6-lane Tambaram-Chengalpattu elevated corridor. With an estimated investment of Rs 3,523 crore, the project aims to alleviate heavy traffic congestion experienced along the bustling stretch. The comprehensive detailed project report (DPR) for the 94-km Tambaram-Tindivanam section of the Grand Southern Trunk (GST) road has already been completed, and construction work on the 27-km Tambaram-Chengalpattu elevated corridor is set to commence soon.
The Tambaram-Chengalpattu area has been plagued by incessant traffic congestion throughout the day, given its proximity to commercial, industrial, and residential zones. The introduction of the elevated corridor will provide a dedicated route for heavy vehicles, including buses, trucks, and cars, effectively decongesting the existing road. The corridor will feature entry and exit ramps at strategic locations, including the Kilambakkam bus terminus, Potheri near SRM College, and Mahindra World City. Spanning a total length of 25.29 km, the elevated corridor will include 5.05 km at the second level, constructed above existing grade separators and flyovers.
Furthermore, NHAI's plan encompasses upgrading the 67.1 km Chengalpattu-Tindivanam segment of the GST road to 8 lanes, with service roads on both sides, doubling its capacity from the current 4 lanes. This development will be accompanied by the installation of an elevated corridor in various locations along the stretch, including Mamandur town, Padalam junction, Karunguzhi junction, Madhurantakam town, and Saram village. Additionally, eight-lane grade separator flyovers have been proposed for major and high-traffic junctions. These initiatives aim to streamline traffic flow and enhance overall road safety in the region.
