J&K metro rail worth Rs 7,942-cr gains momentum
The state and central governments have expedited a mega metro rail project worth Rs 7,942 crore in Jammu and Kashmir, aiming to enhance the public transport system and boost economic activities in the Union Territory. This significant project marks the region's first-ever metro line, bringing an elevated light metro rail system to the capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu.
The introduction of the elevated metrolite systems is expected to revolutionize transportation in Srinagar and Jammu, alleviating traffic congestion and fostering sustainable urban development. The project has received approval from the Public Investment Board of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and is currently awaiting final approval from the cabinet, which is anticipated to be granted soon.
The proposed metro rail networks in Srinagar and Jammu will cover distances of 25 km and 23 km, respectively, with estimated costs of Rs 4,352 crore and Rs 3,590 crore. Construction is set to commence shortly, with a target completion date of December 2026. Upon inauguration, Srinagar and Jammu will become the first non-major cities in India to have a fully operational rapid transport network.
