How do you see the market of self-storage spaces in India and what are the challenges?
The concept of storage facilities for appliances, documents, and automobiles are required by IT and other professionals who travel abroad for short periods of time or by people renovating their homes. In India, the self-storage industry is relatively young, and we are yet to tap its market potential. While there are many players in India today, catering to this requirement, SafeStorage is one the largest in terms of space owned.
Covid-19 has also impacted the market of storage spaces. With companies adopting the Work from Home model since early 2020, many people have moved out of their rented apartments and have gone back to their hometowns for social and economic reasons. In such times, Self- Storage units offer them a safe place to store their valuable belongings.
With the rise in demand for logistics there is also going to be a surge in volumes, which will pose many challenges in terms of handling capacity, managing the workforce and the overall business.
What are the facilities at SafeStorage® and what services does it provide?
SafeStorage® offers a wide range of storage solutions from household items to storage management of important documents and records at state-of-the-art facilities in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, and Mumbai. It stores and manages household appliances, corporate documents, office furniture, and provides support space for small-scale businesses.
Our aim is to position SafeStorage as a one-stop destination for all business and personal storage needs for both the short and long-term needs. We guarantee cost-effective, highly secured, and safety measures, and reliable, flexible, customized, and on-demand storage space as per the client’s convenience.
How do you ensure the safety of customers’ belongings at your warehouses?
SafeStorage provides a safe, secured and insured space, making storage safe and easy with all the necessary protection and precautions. We provide short-term, long-term, and temporary storage spaces, which are economical and easy to access.
SafeStorage warehouses are equipped with modular fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, CCTV cameras and alarm systems, and secured with biometric access. SafeStorage undertakes regular pest control measures and maintains clean, dry, secure storage facilities. All items are stored on wooden pallets to protect them from pests.
We have tied up with United India Insurance for coverage of `112 crore effective from 7 June 2021. The list of items covered under insurance are electronic and electrical items, household/office furniture, office/home equipment, machinery, motor vehicles, and related items of clients. The company’s fleet of 15 owned vehicles is also covered under insurance by default.
How has the company progressed over the years?
SafeStorage was launched in 2015 in a small one BHK apartment; and it took us two months to get our first customer and 10 leads. Today, the company has over 8.5 lakh square feet of space spread across 30+ warehouses. We have scaled up to 2800+ leads in a single day with 60+ pickups, and we are moving 1000+ customers’ household goods to warehouses per month. We have facilitated space for 15000+ personal storage clients and 300+ corporate clients for Document Storage & Tape Vaulting. We are also ISO 9001 certified.
Our team is currently a family of 220 members across various divisions like Technology, Digital Marketing, CRM, and Sales. The Logistics and Operations is headed by Venu Madhav M (Co-Founder & COO); Accounts and Warehousing is headed by Nageswar M (Co-Founder & CFO).
What would you attribute the company’s success to?
We would like to attribute the company’s success and fast growth to the quality service that we offer our customers. We recently registered five times growth in our business following our massive technology upgrade. We have completely overhauled our website and have a new Graphic User Interface (GUI), which has brought down the average booking time from 3 minutes to just 30 seconds.
To optimize warehousing and to facilitate ease of operations, we have incorporated AI&ML models in our processes. Artificial Intelligence is used to identify unused spaces across warehouses, which also suggests the best space to fit the inbound customer’s goods/items.
The company is using Machine Learning & Deep Learning to assign pickups based on geography, which has resulted in optimization of transportation. Our internal tech team of 12 members has developed this software over the last 4 months.
What are your plans for expanding the business?
We are looking at cities in the north and east of India as we want to expand our business footprint across the country; we plan to be present in nine cities by 2021-end. We will also be venturing into the packers and movers’ business, besides which, we are also considering the feasibility of co-working spaces and last mile delivery.
