Shri K.K. Goel Chairman, KDP Infrastructure

Shri K.K. Goel Chairman, KDP Infrastructure

K K Goel
Started his career as a trader of steels and later as a contractor of building construction with National Thermal Power Corporation, Dadri, Shri K.K. Goel, currently, is the Founder & Chairman of KDP Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd., an infrastructure and group housing project development company whose highly innovative residential and commercial projects have won 'KDP' as a brand of reckoning in the Real Estate arena.

The flashback of how KDP was evolved to take its current form as an incredible brand that imprints inspiring story behind its success. It takes us back to see three decades of relentless, dedicated and honest efforts put in by its founder Shri K.K. Goel, all to surprise how he achieved this despite it being from a village & humble back ground. When economy was receding, population exploding, needs growing, survival '& sustenance were a common challenge in those days.

Born in Dankaur (Gutambudh Nagar), the young Goel nurtured ambitions that any other person does in life. After Graduating in science in 1978, he started the family business of trading and sales of steels – mainly supplying to large government projects in Ghaziabad. The business flourished for over a period of 6-7 years and he achieved a reputation of being a good steel trader. However, the government control over steel and steep hike in cost adversely impacted his business and he was coerced to discontinue it due to huge losses.

KDP Infrastructure
During 1984-87, notwithstanding the enormous mental pressure and financial constraint that black shadowed his fortunes, he moved on to Noida undertaking small contracts of constructing roads, drainages, water tanks etc. His determination and dedication brought this new beginning of business a good success and gave him enough experience and confidence in the field of construction.

He got a break in the year 1987 when he undertook the construction contract with National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Dadri. The projects completed under his contracts include Road, Bridge, Govt Buildings & and it was a major milestone in his growth when he got a huge contract for building Offices and Staff Quarters which was a huge success.

National Thermal Power Corporation
Later in 1992, he launched a mega township on 20 acres of land in Surajpur, Greater Noida, near Dadri and undertook major work of building roads, landscaping, lightings plottings and buildings but unfortunataely the project could not proceed & was abondoned due to a major change in the government policy.

In the year 1999, Shri Goel ventured into the business as a developer having its office at Noida with a commercial project "GREATER NOIDA SHOPPLING PLAZA". This is the first commercial project of 1,10,000 sq.ft surrounded by a large population where business inflow is the maximum. It was really a challenge to execute this project as the conditions at this location was in a bad shape. It was successfully completed and was a huge success. It became commercially operational in the last 5 years. The project has been widely appreciated by the business communities in and around the location.

In the meantime, KDP Introduced KDP Grand Savanna (Rajnagar Extn. Ghaziabad) which is an example of high tech yet contemporary architectural designs with modern facilities including resort like landscaping, club, inhouse crèche, multipurpose community hall etc. Spread over 12.69 acres with 1165 flats of 2/3 BHK, it provides 80% land for greenery with the most modern facilities.

GREATER NOIDA SHOPPLING PLAZA
In initial stage of launching, Rajnagar Extn was totally barren and remote place with hardly any population. After introduction of KDP Grand Savanna and number of projects by other developers, this location has gradually turned into a luxurious residential hub. Rajnagar Extn. is situated away from the hussle and bussle of Ghaziabad City. Builders have constructed their prestigious projects in competition with each other thereby making more attractive offers to the general public. Almost 50,000 families are expected to move into this posh location in a matter of one year while a large number of families are already enjoying a happy living.

Under the stewardship of Mr. Goel , who is a Construction & Planning Expert with over three decades of experience and has been elected President of Rajnagar Extention Developers Association, Ghaziabad for two consecutive terms, the group has ambitious plans in the ofting and apart from introducing new residential projects, it will be entering into new horizons such as Education, Multiplexes & Hospitality.

Kamal Bali President & CEO, LeeBoy

Kamal Bali President & CEO, LeeBoy

Mr. Kamal Bali
Kamal Bali, an engineering graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) has had a fascinating journey with some of India’s top corporate as well as multinational corporations, largely in the automotive (tractors), construction & heavy equipment (C&HE) industries. Over the years, he handled several leading portfolios in different businesses like Business Strategy, Business Turnaround, Strategic Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Strategic Sourcing, and General Management.

Prior to joining LeeBoy India, he spearheaded the transformation of Escorts Construction Equipment Limited, and cherishes the impactful stints with the group first as the head of Agri business (Tractor) sales and later as CEO & Board member of the Construction Equipment business. With a great deal of satisfaction, he also played the transformational role at Same Deutz-Fahr Group Italia’s Indian subsidiary and as its CEO & Managing Director, he was responsible for re-building the Indian subsidiary of the $2.0 bn Engine & Agri-equipment giant.

He has contributed in increasing Escorts’ market share in the tractor business in 2001-02, re-establishing the Construction Equipment business for the group and now the unique value proposition that LeeBoy has built for the Indian market in the CE space. He believes that behind achievements, there has been an equal share of road blocks. However, the chief attributes that he demonstrated through thick and thin are the passion to excel, persevering relentlessly on the identified critical success factors with uncompromising values and ethos.

As the CEO and President at Leeboy, Mr. Bali has successfully spearheaded corporations, building and driving India strategy, together with complete P&L responsibilities. He has taken on the exciting and challenging task of leading a Greenfield venture set up by the Singapore Technologies Group (STE), with a unique, customer centric value proposition in the highly competitive and growing Construction Equipment (CE) industry in India.

He actively encourages bright youngsters to join the infrastructure industry as is also apparent from the number of interns completing their projects at LeeBoy India. In fact, his son is a pilot in the aviation industry with stints across India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

For successful professional life, he thinks that in an age where the market is flooded with ‘me-too’ products and service offerings, it is critical for an organization to differentiate itself …. To deliver value to the customer and to achieve breakthrough growth! So he opines that for a triumphant life, one should follow five key imperatives that are: to keep in touch with the customer directly to gather first-hand insights; have ability to decipher the critical success factors from amongst a huge medley of issues; should have a vibrant team of enterprising people, who share and walk the compelling vision of the corporation; build collaborative networks of key stakeholders in the business eco-system to maintain smooth business running cycles and lastly, should have an unrelenting focus on excellence in execution. The last mile is that all-critical area which needs to be seen to completion to its finest details if we want to convert our boardroom strategies into successful on-ground realities.

On being asked about his mission ahead, he said, for him the aspiration in life is now to see the brand LEEBOY and its value proposition create an unprecedented impact in the industry, forcing others to follow suit.

Besides having high levels of professionalism and decorum, Kamal is an avid sports enthusiast and on most weekends, he is one of the earliest to tee off at one of the golf courses in Bangalore. Apart from Golf, he loves Badminton which he has been playing for the past four decades. He loves to read management case studies too.

Mr Hiranandani reminiscing the past era says, "although that time real estate was considered as dirty industry and people associated with it as corrupt so it was really a big risk to venture in this sector but we didn't lose hope and worked hard and with our consistent efforts, we get first spark of recognition in the construction line with our work in Versova, Andheri in the mid-eighties. Another big break came when we got an opportunity to develop a large township at Powai with modern Infrastructure of concrete roads, regular water supply, recycled sewerage water plant, electric & high tech communication networks as well as top-of-the-line commercial, residential, and educational facilities. Since then, the Hiranandani Group has come a long way to be recognized countrywide for their modern and state-of-the-art mix-user township projects."

For India's growth story, he is very much optimistic and avers that although currently country's infrastructure and construction sector is passing through the tough phase but it has bright future ahead.

K. Vijay Managing Director, Ajax Fiori

K. Vijay Managing Director, Ajax Fiori

K. Vijay
"In my opinion, one should be passionate about what one does and should do it in a spirit of achieving excellence and nothing less. I also very strongly believe that, as a leader, you should hold yourself accountable to the same high ethical and professional standards that you expect from your team," this is what Mr.K.Vijay believes, is the mantra of a successful life.

He is of the opinion that every person should follow his or her own passion and interests, and determine the course of his or her life. He even inculcated this belief in his children so that whatever profession they choose, it will be of their own volition.

Applying the same mantra in his life too, he, as an alumnus of IIT-Chennai, started his career with L&T and saw joining this company as an opportunity to work in the core mechanical equipment sector, which had always been his special interest. His fascination with the construction equipment sector began with the first introduction to the hydraulic excavator and that has remained with him ever since. It was fortunate for him that, early in his career, being so young; he was given the responsibility to head the design team, manufacturing the first hydraulic excavators in India, in collaboration with Poclain of France.

Early nineties saw the beginning of major infrastructure development in India, and the need for mechanization became obvious. Thereafter, in the field of concreting, he spotted the self-loading mobile concrete mixer as an opportunity which he believed was a right tool for Indian contractors. This belief gave birth to Ajax Fiori, who pioneered the use of the concrete mixer in multiple application sectors in a very short time, and today it has become the accepted solution nationwide acrossapplication sectors. The addition of a complete range of Batching plant solutions was a logical step forward.

As managing director of Ajax Fiori, he is working to position the company as one of the most important players in the concreting sector in India. Currently with over 16 standard products, the company is still busy adding to its portfolio and have plans to round out its product range in the concreting equipment sector over the next two or three years. Mr. Vijay has always emphasized the imperative of not only building a good product, but also providing timely and effective product support to his customers nationwide. He also intends to create a significant presence for Ajax Fiori beyond Indian shores in the coming years.

Talking about his most memorable experience he says, "The launch of our first product, self-loading concrete mixer in 1995, was a very special moment, as, indeed, has been the launch of every subsequent product. Even more gratifying is when a customer tells me that he is most satisfied with our product and products support. But nothing beats the heady feeling that we have contributed, in our own small way, to building the future of India." Being trained in France and Italy, I have tried to combine European discipline and work ethic with the Indian ethos to create, in our organization, enduring standards of integrity and excellence, which I see as an achievement of not inconsiderable measure."

On roadblocks he reminisces," the period from 1996 to 1997 was one of the most difficult times in the then brief history of our company, as the market plummeted and we were left with huge inventoriesalmost leading to our collapse. Being very optimistic for the Indian economy he avers, "I have strong faith that the Indian growth story is intact, albeit with several hiccups, such as we are witnessing now. The Indian entrepreneurial spirit, the burgeoning middle class, and the industriousness of Indians will surely drive growth in the coming decades and position India amongst the world’s most important economic powerhouses. India, in the next decade, will be counted amongst the largest global economies, and I see Ajax Fiori as a multinational player of some significance on this stage."

"I would personally like to groom my successor in the next few years, and gradually ease myself out of day-to-day operations in order to devote my time to my other interests, mainly social causes. I am an avid reader and very fond of music. All my free time I have, I want to spend with my family," he shared.

H. S. Mohan Chief Operating Officer, Doosan Infracore India

H. S. Mohan Chief Operating Officer, Doosan Infracore India

H. S. Mohan
H.S.Mohan, comes from a family of Engineers, who graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the prestigious National Institute of Engineering, Mysore and proceeded to obtain Post Graduation in Marketing Management from Nagpur University.

Captivated by construction machineries, he joined Marshall Sons & Co (India) Ltd., as a Management Trainee. As a person, he always wants to be 'outside comfort zone' accepting new challenges and applying creative thinking. During the year 1988, he joined JCB India Ltd., (formerly Escorts JCB Ltd.,) as Area Sales Manager and quickly moving ranks to assume role and responsibilities of Regional Manager, Business Manager, Product Manager & Head of "Heavy Line Sales," establishing Excavators, Wheeled Loaders & Compaction Equipment products on the way. The journey's major challenges were around manpower development for selling & servicing the Heavy Line machines. In 2008, Mohan moved to JCB – Heavy Line manufacturing plant in Pune to Head Operations for wheeled equipment.

During his long fruitful journey with JCB, he became a Certified Auditor and was also proficient at projects execution. He has had close insight of all industry functions. He acknowledges the 'learning's from the line associates.'

His journey continued with joining Doosan, as Chief Operating Officer, at a critical state in 2010. Doosan Infracore is an amalgamation of Daewoo Excavators, Ingersoll Rand Compressor Division and the famous Bobcat machines. The company was going through major changes both internally and externally. Hugely diverse Korean, American and Indian work cultures and employee's concerns on their future and company's growth brought a whole new dimension in terms of challenges.

He accepted the challenges and started streamlining all departments one by one from dealers/distributors, sales & after sales to production and capacity enhancement which in return has brought profitability and most importantly 'Doosan' brand recall as multi- products company.

According to Mr. Mohan, "It's fundamental that a company performs, and by performance, I mean return on investments, far superior than your competitors – this is the mantra for long-term sustenance." It is often said that Indian CEOs are hasty in forming opinions of people they deal with everyday. This may include employees, service providers, trade partners or even customers. But in reality, the leader has to stomach variety of individuals. An aspiring business leader needs to be conservative in his likes & dislikes and stays away from adopting a 'hero' or 'villain' approach in evaluating his associates. The more you grow up the ladder, the more you tend to become loner. Success can only come through taking people with you. This requires compromise, flexibility, adjustments and in one sentence 'leave your ego' in the dickey when you enter your office. Learn to be a patient listener and at the same time drive your points across.

Sharing his views on Indian economy, he stated that Infrastructure development is the key for the growth of the economy. India has large potential with 1.2 billion people. The country needs to develop roads, provide water, electricity & basic needs. Construction industry will get the required 'impetus' and will be the focus area for any government to succeed. Overall with right policy and aggressive approach, this industry's potential will be next to China. Hence, investment and progress will see highest growth in the coming years.

In Personal life, Mohan is devoted to his family and his professional work equally; he loves to spend most of the free time with family and close friends from the industry and outside industry. He loves music and spends time with his pet dog to reenergize himself. He understands that one also needs to take care of himself in this stressful atmosphere, to survive you need to give time to yourself, develop a hobby which you like, which keeps you fit. Believe in yourself, enjoy what you are doing.

In a parting note, Mohan believes the importance to deliver and to share the experiance with the society. He wishes to spend the remaining time of his career by giving back to the industry and people that have sculpted him and his career.

Besides, he is currently member of Technical Committee – iCEMA (formerly IECIAL), member of "Mining & Construction Equipment Division" Year 2012-13 – CII Delhi, and also member of 'Infrastructure Committee' Year 2012-13 – CII Chennai.
