CMRL to build deepest metro station in Chennai
The Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) is facing a challenging task in its Phase-II project as it has to dig 35 meters (115 feet) below the ground to build the Thirumayilai metro station. The station will be the deepest in the city at 35 meters and will be the last station to be completed in 2028.
Phase-II of the Chennai Metro project comprises three corridors: Madhavaram to SIPCOT (corridor-3), Lighthouse to Poonamallee (corridor-44), and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (corridor-5). Thirumayilai station will serve as the junction for Corridor-3 and Corridor-4. The 118.1 km long project is expected to cost approximately Rs 61,843 crore.
The contract for building the Thirumayilai station was recently awarded. CMRL officials have said that it is a difficult undertaking as the road space is narrow and geological conditions are also challenging.
Thirumayilai station will cover an area of 4,854.4 square meters and will connect the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) station and the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus stop. It is located underneath the junction of Luz and Canal Bank Road in Mylapore.
The Thirumayilai station will differ from other stations in Phase-II as it will have five entry and exit points instead of two.
