MoHUA approves Rs 10,570-cr Tricity metro project in Chandigarh
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has granted approval for the Tricity metro rail project, encompassing a 39-km network connecting Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula. The ambitious mass rapid transport system (MRTS) requires an investment of Rs 10,570 crore and aims to significantly improve transportation in the region.
The Tricity metro project, excluding the heritage sectors from sectors 1 to 30, will include the construction of bus terminals, depots, and various infrastructure enhancements at busy intersections. The comprehensive mobility plan (CMP), which received in-principle approval from the governments of Chandigarh, Haryana, and Punjab in April 2023, forms the foundation for this transformative metro initiative.
Implemented in two phases, the metro network will span Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Zirakpur, New Chandigarh, and Pinjore. The first phase, scheduled from 2027 to 2037, will cover key routes such as Sarangpur to Panchkula ISBT, Rock Garden to Zirakpur ISBT via Mohali Industrial Area and the airport, and Grain Market Chowk in Sector 39 to Transport Nagar in Sector 26. The subsequent phase, planned for development after 2037, will introduce four additional routes, further expanding the metro network.
