Bhutan Unveils Ambitious Gelephu Smartcity Project
Bhutan announces plans for a mega "international city," the 'Gelephu Smartcity Project,' covering 1,000 square km near the Assam border. Introduced by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the project aims to be an economic corridor connecting South Asia with Southeast Asia via India's northeastern states. Governed under distinct laws to attract foreign investment, the Gelephu Special Administrative Region (SAR) in the Sarpang district will facilitate connectivity from Bhutan to Assam and eventually provide access to Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Singapore. The comprehensive project also includes the construction of an international airport at Gelephu, marking a significant development for Bhutan's infrastructure.
