Can India Lead the Global Shipbuilding Value Chain?
With a rich maritime background, India is at a key point in its maritime history. According to Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, currently positioned at 16th position in global shipbuilding, India aims to be among the top 10 shipbuilding nations by 2030 and among the top 5 by 2047. With the potential to transform its shipping industry, India has yet to achieve a global leadership position in shipbuilding. China is currently at the top of the shipbuilding industry with over 50% of the world’s commercial shipbuilding output. Out of all the best shipyards in the world, seven are located in China alone.“India must overcome its challenges in competitiveness, capacity, and credibility to emerge among the top 10 shipbuilding nations by 2030 and the top five by 2047. To develop advanced maritime infrastructure, the focus should be on building specialised vessels—including coastal vessels, offshore support vessels, and general cargo ships—which require a strong combination of technical expertise and advanced information systems,” says Pushpank Kaushik, CEO & Head of Business Development (Subcontinent, Middle East, and Southeast Asia), Jassper Shipping.
